About Teresa:

Teresa Meier is a multimedia artist based in Seattle, Washington. She holds an MFA in photography, enjoys teaching, and is fascinated with telling stories through elaborately constructed digital photo-montages. She founded Light Box Laboratories, a photography based art-therapy program dedicated to serving underprivileged and at-risk teens. She firmly believes that photography changes lives. It changed hers. She loves a good adventure, has an unusually small tabby cat named Towels and an unusually large black cat named Richard Parker, her left eye is lazy, and stove top diagrams confound her. Justin Lowry opened her heart. And she found her way home.

She was recently awarded both Director’s and Juror’s Award at PhotoPlace Gallery, Honorable mention at the PX3, Prix De La Photogprahie Paris, the Ringholz Art Supply Award, second place at the Szeklerland Photo Biennial, and Director’s Honorable Mention at the Center for Fine Art Photography. Her work has been exhibited internationally, recently appeared in Don’t Take Pictures, Communication Arts, and COOPH, and is represented at the Portland Art Museum’s Rental Sales

General Artist Statement:

I contemplate the shared truths of the human story–love, fear, home, family, birth, aging, dying–through the lens of the surreal. In a series of autobiographical self-portraits, I examine identity within the context of family history and the natural world. The work tackles the interwoven complexities of past and present and, specifically, how the past shapes and dictates our perception of our present self and relationships. I encourage introspection and inspire awe through journey-like narratives and fantastical landscapes embedded with unexpected juxtapositions of characters and settings.

My work is heavily influenced by nature, steeped in the myth and magic of the natural world. Growing up in Oregon, I was surrounded by stunningly beautiful landscapes that generated feelings of awe and appreciation. I try to tap into these feelings of wonder with my imagery as a way to draw viewers in and captivate them with the natural beauty of the world. By tapping into wonder, I encourage the feelings of surprise, curiosity, contemplation, and joy. Surprise allows us to reexamine and revise our concepts and beliefs, and curiosity prompts us to learn more. In short, wonder draws us outside of ourselves and reconnects us to something greater, the sublime, which is something we all desperately need, especially, now.

People often speak of getting back to nature, implying that they’ve somehow become apart from it. As I continue this work, provoking introspection and humbly trying to capture the fleeting and natural beauty of this world, I hope to challenge people’s notion that we are apart from and outside of nature, encouraging them to rethink how they interact with and impact, not only each other, but also the natural world.

While my imagery is inspired by autobiographical events, the feelings expressed are universal human experiences, in other words, something everyone can relate to. In an attempt to share my story so it could be understood in a broader sense, I called on fairy tales and archetypes as a mode to express my ideas visually. I further looked to surrealism for its ability to express the intangible and the internal. And finally, I looked to nature for its ability to inspire feelings of awe and wonder. I try to tap into these feelings of wonder with my imagery as a way to draw viewers in and captivate them. By tapping into wonder, I encourage the feelings of surprise, curiosity, contemplation, and joy. Surprise allows us to reexamine and revise our concepts and beliefs, and curiosity prompts us to learn more. In short, wonder draws us outside of ourselves and reconnects us to something greater, the sublime.

This work is the culmination of my obsessions. It is my story, my journey to self worth, my struggles, my fears, my mistrust, my dreams, my hopes--all torn apart, meticulously analyzed, and stitched back together to reveal the truth as I know it.
